We produce several Main Stage and Second Stage shows each year. Main Stage
shows are produced by the program as extracurricular activities. These shows
are done with full support for technical aspects. The auditions and crews for
these shows are open to all students. Second Stage shows are typically student
produced and driven. This includes budgets, casting, technical needs, etc.
Special events include any outside group, such as the University of Texas, or
culminating events like the End-of-Year Exhibition.
main stage shows
OMNIUM GATHERUM (Sept 9-12) by Theresa Rebeck
and Alexandra Gersten-Vassilaros - Believing that lively, contentious debate is
the heart and soul of a dinner party, a domestic artist and perfect hostess has
invited an assortment of opinionated personalities to share a surreal meal. The
guests at this exquisite feast of food and argument confront the global
implications of September 11th and beyond in an urgent, impassioned and
hilarious work that was applauded at Actors Theatre of Louisville's Humana
Festival and Off Broadway.
CHANGES OF HEART (Oct 21-31) by Marivaux, translated by Stephen Wadsworth -
Marivaux's fabulous Harlequin pursues his country love Silvia to the palace,
where the lovelorn Prince holds her against her will. Flaminia, an intriguer at
court, attempts to reroute the affections of both Silvia and Harlequin, whose
take no prisoners belligerence is softened and transformed. None expect such
huge and costly changes of heart and, at the end of a hilarious day full of
wonderment, they and others at court are wounded and ennobled by love.
AS YOU LIKE IT (Nov 18-20) by William Shakespeare - One of
Shakespeare’s most beloved romances, “As You Like It,”
reminds all of us, as we “play our parts” in this brief life, that
love and forgiveness are more important than power or position. Directed by
veteran educator, actor and director, Beryl Knifton, this excited production
will take place at the Curtain Theatre, a replica of Elizabethan Era open air
theatres right here in Austin. Three evening shows plus one "as it would've
been" day time performance mark this as a highlight of the season.
NUNSENSE (Dec 10-11) by Dan Groggin - Five of the Little Sisters of Hoboken
discover that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, accidentally killed all
but 19 of the convent with her tainted vichyssoise. With no money in the kitty
to pay for all the burials, with the deceased nuns on ice in the deep freeze,
they decide to stage a variety show in the Mount Saint Helen's School
auditorium to raise the necessary amount. This production will feature some of
McCallum's talented, and fearless, faculty getting in the habit and bringing on
the laughs. Don't miss this SPECIAL TWO NIGHT ONLY PRODUCTION!
The Who's TOMMY (Feb 24-Mar 6) - Peter Townshend’s tale of a young
boy’s journey from pain to triumph is the most electrifying evening of
rock and roll ever to play in a theatre! After witnessing the accidental murder
of his mother's lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia, and
as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and
neighbors. As an adolescent, he’s discovered to have an uncanny knack for
playing pinball, and when his mother finally breaks through his catatonia, he
becomes an international pinball superstar. Expect an approach that is as
innovative as any previous McCallum musical.
