We produce several Main Stage and Second Stage shows each year. Main Stage
shows are produced by the program as extracurricular activities. These shows
are done with full support for technical aspects. The auditions and crews for
these shows are open to all students. Second Stage shows are typically student
produced and driven. This includes budgets, casting, technical needs, etc.
Special events include any outside group, such as the University of Texas, or
culminating events like the End-of-Year Exhibition.
main stage shows
BEEHIVE: The 60s Girl Group Musical (September 17-27) - Seven wailing
women, a hot six-piece band, 50 outrageous costumes and wigs and 15 cans of
hairspray a week can only mean one thing — BEEHIVE, The 60's Musical
Sensation is coming. BEEHIVE is a high-energy musical revue tracing the coming
of age of women’s music through 37 popular hits of the girl groups and
solo singers of the 1960’s. The Chiffons, The Supremes, Tina Turner, and
Aretha Franklin are just some of the 60’s pop stars portrayed by the
super talented cast. Hear such favorites as My Boyfriend’s Back, One Fine
Day, Where the Boys Are, Downtown, Proud Mary, (You Make Me Feel Like) A
Natural Woman, and Respect.
THE MAGIC FIRE (October 15-18) - Under the direction of former theatre
teacher and beloved social studies teacher Mr. Bill Staples, THE MAGIC FIRE
concerns a family of Italian immigrants in the Buenos Aires of the 1950s at the
time of the death of Eva Perón. The father, Otto Berg, himself a refugee from
Nazi Austria, and his family find themselves trapped in the fascist system of
Juan Perón's regime, and once again retreat, taking private refuge in books,
music, theatre and the arts. Their next-door neighbor, Henri Fontannes, a
high-ranking officer in the Peronist army, is most likely involved in secret
police activity in which enemies of the state are known to "disappear." He and
his wife, Angelica, share with the Bergs the geographical location of their
living quarters and an ardent love for the arts. When the reality of the
political situation enters the Bergs' own apartment (their maid's brother is in
hiding there), they are forced to confront their ethical choices—morals
and politics in place of art, and Fontannes becomes the only man who can help
them.
JUNGALBOOK (December 3-6, Th-Sat @ 7p, Sun @ 2p) - A play, a strikingly
visual story, and a powerful message all wrapped into one. The show's theme of
"one blood you and me" reminds us that we are connected in everything we
do.
EVITA (February 25-March 7 Th-Sat @ 7p, Sun @ 2p) - Oh what a circus! Oh
what a show! Winner of seven Tony Awards®, EVITA brings to life the dynamic,
larger-than-life persona of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan
Perón. Blessed with charisma, Eva Perón captivated a nation by championing the
working class. This exuberant production creates a gripping theatrical
experience and features Andrew Lloyd Webber's compelling Latin, pop and jazz
influenced score. One of the most popular collaborations between Webber and Tim
Rice, this legendary musical features the memorable song "Don’t Cry for
Me, Argentina."
ON TOUR! Student Repertory (April 22-23 @ 7pm) - As has been the tradition,
MacTheatre’s fills its spring with a repertory of student directed and/or
written works. This year’s theme, ON TOUR!, is intended to create
opportunities for students to learn the mechanics of taking a show on the road.
They will each find a location, find a play that fits that location, and do all
the leg work to successfully produce a piece of theatre. Come see these young
artists take over the McCallum stage as they cast, design, and direct these
shows and perform them at home for two nights only. Plays and schedule will be
announced in Spring 2010.
SALVAGE VANGUARD THEATRE CoProduction (May TBA) - Through our new
playwriting class, we'll pick and develop an original work to be produced in
conjunction with Salvage Vanguard Theatre and directed by their Artistic
Director, Jenny Larson.
